Summary/Abstract: There have been radical alterations in the self-perceptions of men about being a “man” in today’s societies which carry the pains of the transition from modernity to post-modernity. The legitimate power of “rational man” has been questioned by criticism directed towards the instrumental mind with the rebellion of women and gay movements against social gender roles. Definitions of ”masculinity”, in other words, the expectations from men in modern and post-modern societies differ. This study aims to lay bare the challenge the man has been subject to in the hegemonic discourse, how he seeks alternative post-identities for himself to get rid of his modern identity.
