Summary/Abstract: The study is the first attempt in the history of Bulgarian literary studies for a comprehensive overview of the heritage of the critic Slavcho Paskalev (1874-1919). He was one of the most highly educated Bulgarian literature teachers in the early twentieth century with a strong influence on generations of writers and critics. He did not write a book, but his articles and studies attract considerable interest. In the words of Dr. K. Krastev, Paskalev stands out as a cultural leader of the intelligentsia. Paskalev developed an integrated project for modern literary education based on a bibliography, quantitative sociological and psychological studies of the reader’s reception. He wrote the first major Bulgarian study on children's literature, which is still important today. In 1910 Paskalev`s article on the novel "Sanin” by M.P. Artsibashev was an original and reasonable voice in the turbulent debate about the moral responsibility of literature and the artistic boundaries of eroticism.
