The Town and the Zone – References to the Phrase’s Metaphorism in the Poetry of Atanas Dalchev and Gyiom Apolliner

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study in the report prepared for the jubilee conference, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Atanas Dalchev’s birthday, is the nearness and distinction in the reference and construction of metaphorism in Dalchev’s book “Paris” (1930) and Apolliner’s poem “Zone” (“Alcohols”, 1913). The intertextual approach is provoked by the question: how does it happen that Dalchev’s “Paris” modulates zones of man, while Apolliner’s “Zone” modulates the town of man. Observations turn our attention to Dalchev’s metaphrases forming meanings subjected to doubts and existing realizations in which quite often looking, listening, naming put forward a semiotic code. If in Dalchev’s town the man looks for his zones, finds out/ realizes / denies his existential states, in Apolliner’s poem “the zone” is taken for granted. Its “hidden nature” points to the complex polyphonic and polysemantic figurative amalgam of the town and it’s probable that one of the ways of the postsymbolic modernism in Europe starts from its autobiographical explication. This text is part of a bigger project of the author working on her doctorate thesis in New Bulgarian Literature. For the present the text has got the working title The Locked up Symbol and the Freed Metaphor in the Poetry of Atanas Dalchev.
