Summary/Abstract: Dostoevsky's novel The Humiliated and the Offended is replete with difficult to explain chronological "shifts", which I. Z. Serman once explained by the" idea of continuity in the mental life " of Russia in the middle of the XIX century. The author of the article believes that the" oddities "of the chronology of Dostoevsky's novel are primarily intended to" switch" the reader's perception to the plane of mythopoetic associations. The mythopoetic," potustornaya " reality is created in Dostoevsky due to references to the traditions of adventurous and Gothic novels, the works of A. S. Pushkin, V. Scott, E. T. Hoffman, New Testament parables, and even a fairy tale. The action of the novel is timed to the period of Lent, the main plot conflict is resolved on the eve of Easter. The actions of the heroes, the events themselves will be determined not by the everyday logic or the warehouse of their characters, but by the logic of the sacred time. The reader will not be presented with a household story about a girl who was seduced and left her parents ' house, but a story about the great and destructive passions that take possession of the heroes and that they will overcome during the Easter days. Even the space around the heroes who have defeated pride will be unrecognizably transformed: they will live in the Garden of Eden, among flowers, in an atmosphere of love. Only the mythopoetic context will explain the paradoxical ending: "humiliated and insulted", slandered and ruined heroes will feel their triumph and will declare victory over those who "humiliated and insulted" them.
