Summary/Abstract: History of the state and justice in Albania is a pedagogical text for law students that was first published during state socialism. The post 1991 editions of this volume reflect a number of changes that the authors did in order to fit to the new post-socialist context. The discussions and analysis in this pedagogical text-book include a number of crucial topics related to the history of state institutions, legality and justices within the Albanian contexts. This pedagogical manual, regardless the importance it bears in the education of students, has not been critically analyzed by scholars of law. By considering this text book as an important ethnographic fact of knowledge production in post-socialist Albania, the analysis offered here aims to critically discuss the formation of students’ historical and legal imagination by certain deployment of ethnographic data and ethnological interpretations that fit and also define the modernist imaginary on state, justice, society and culture. This article builds on a numbers of important debates deriving from the critical scholarship in the field of anthropology of state and law.
