Summary/Abstract: John Chrysostom is prominent in church history, above all, as a preacher enforced. There are instructions on how to understand and tackle the task of preaching in the writings of the saint there are almost no theoretical considerations. But reads one reads his texts in the light of that formal foundation of the sermon as it was contemporary Augustine in Book IV of his work ,,On the Christian Faith benslehre" (De doctrina christiana), one suddenly realizes that Chrysostom's preaching practice is based on solid theoretical foundations (without that a dependency on Augustine should be asserted, which is already evident from chronological reasons). What we call "sermon" also means for and in Chrysostom mainly óuía and λóyoç (homilía and lógos). This Language usage is already in the New Testament and in the early Christian tradition rooted. The two expressions are used, among other things, at two for Christian preaching significant occasions: in the conversation in which Jesus in Emmaus interprets the Scriptures for the disciples, and in the discussions in which it is about the exposition of the truth concerning the Scriptures. The distinction between the two terms, however, did not actually prevail.
