Summary/Abstract: This article examines the etymology of words for ‘weep’ in ancient Indo-European languages. It is important to study the extent to which semantic development refl ects all aspects of this phenomenon. Another interesting question is whether positive stimuli are refl ected in the semantic evolution of the words that express this concept. The majority of semantic developments to which Indo-European languages bear witness are linked to a primary meaning designating sounds or noises. On the other hand, grief and sorrow are the only emotions that are at the basis of the semantic evolution of words expressing the notion ‘weep’.
