Summary/Abstract: In the relationship between nation-state and ethnic homogenization, the question of space plays an essential role; more precisely: the landscape, in which these ideas find their implementation, or which for itself becomes the object of discourse, for instance when it comes to the respective national claims on space. Continuities as well as ruptures of social discourse are often reflected in space or are conserved by it, sometimes reloaded with sense and passed on to future generations. From the point of view of a Germanist, writer and translator, one is quite aware of space and its often neglected significance for society, especially if one was born in Soviet Ukraine, in Russian Ивано-Франковск (Ivano-Frankovsk), a city that formerly belonged for almost 150 years to Austrian Galicia-Lodomeria and, during that time, was called Stanislau, while since 1918, in the interwar period, it became for about 20 years Polish Stanisław, after 1944 it was renamed Ivano-Frankovsk and nowadays, since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it calls itself in Ukrainian Івано-Франківськ (Ivano-Frankivs’k).
