Summary/Abstract: The article of the Director of Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine academician Hanna A. Skrypnyk is devoted to the 90th anniversary of scientific research at the institution. The author suggests that the prehistory of the Institute dates back to the 1920s and is closely connected to the creation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (UAS, YUAN), and particularly, with such establishments as the Ethnographic Commission, the Ethnology Department and others. In 1936 the Institute of Ukrainian folklore was established. Later it was reorganized into Art Criticism, Folklore and Ethnography Institute AS of UkrSSR, headed for more than two decades by the famous poet and academician Maksym Rylsky. Subsequently in 1994 the Institute was named after him. Hanna A. Skrypnyk mentions the departments still operating in the structure of the Institute: musicology; ethnomusicology; folkloristics; theatre studies and cultural studies; cinematography, decorative-applied art; folk arts of foreign countries; fine arts and Ukrainian Ethnological Centre; scientific library and manuscripts funds. She consistently describes the scientific and organizational activities of the departments, presents scientists and fundamental works and also pays attention to the international activities of the Institute, including its periodicals (total 5).
