Culture and Graduates of Teacher Training of Slovak Language and Literature

Summary/Abstract: The paper gives a comprehensive view of the perception of culture by graduates of Slovak language and literature and their involvement in cultural life. According to one of the surprising results of the survey, – which was carried out at the Department of Slovak Language and Literature of J. Selye University in 2022 – the participants’ reading lists do not contain any professional linguistic or literary magazine. They are neither interested in literary quizzes nor in discussions with writers. Furthermore, the graduates do not go to concerts or attend theatres. The survey has made it possible to identify the needs of the research group and can form the basis for the preparation of new educational programs in the field of culture. Also, the findings can propose a further direction to state cultural policy addressing the youth (especially students of Slovak language and literature), and they can urge the creation of youth-specific priority programs supported by local government. Finally, it can serve as an inspiration for creating cultural activities at the national, regional, and local levels.
