Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the cultural-educational circumstances in Bosnia, primarily in and around Brcko at the turn of the century. Arrival of the Austro-Hungarian Empire led to major changes, but individuals, realizing the need for adjustment, founded educational associations and thus aided youth schooling. „Gajret” as a national and cultural institution introduced Bosniaks and Bosnia and Herzegovina in a new, modern era, and added a Western European dimension to Bosnian-Muslim culture. That was reflected primarily in literacy development, encouraging and helping young boys schooling and later the girls’ schooling. „Gajret” role was significant in the development of crafts and trade in a modern way, the education of the peasantry and the emancipation of women. The text contains many names of benefactor from Brcko who funded the „Gajret” and the names of children who received scholarships of „Gajret.” Activities of „Gajret” were the organizing subcommittees, that raised funds in heir villages which were diverted later to pay tuition fees. Also, based on historical data, some events in Brcko which were organized by the „Gajret” were chronologically arranged.
