Summary/Abstract: The year 1946 represents a turning point for post-war Romanian national politics and society. In that year the first pro-communist government, established on 6 March 1945, planned the elections for the Romanian parliament. After a voting fraud, the Communist government obtained official domestic recognition of its power, and over a year later, already being in control of all institutions except the head of state, the Communists started to transform the Romanian political regime copying Stalinist methods. This study aims to show some local aspects of parliamentary elections conducted in 1946. At the base of the study lie a great many documents, offering us an image of the election campaign conducted by the BPD (Democratic Parties Bloc), and well as those of opposition parties such as the PNȚ (National Peasant Party) and PNL (National Liberal Party) in Alba County. The campaign was carried on with great tension because both sides believed that the result of the elections would be decisive for Romania’s future. The hopes of the opposition parties were blown away by the fraud and lies of the Communists, who modified the results and burned most of the voting papers in Alba County and all over the country. They left no proof of opposition wins and claimed victory for the BPD. Following these elections Communism would be instituted in Romania for over 40 years.
