Genre patterns and developing the know ledge of written text types in selected teaching aids preparing for the certificate exam at the B1 level

Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on text forms required at the B1 level of state certificate exam in Polish as a foreign language (module Pisanie – test for adult candidates). It discusses how these forms are presented in three textbooks for exam preparation (B1 – piszę, mówię i zdaję!, M. Januszewicz, Pisz po polsku. Poradnik, ćwiczenia i przygotowanie do egzaminu oraz B. Łukaszewicz, N. Yaumen, A. Święcka i P. Garncarek Zdaj się na polski! Podręcznik kursowy przygotowujący do egzaminu certyfikatowego na poziomie B1). The main goal of the analysis is to answer the question whether genre presentation the discussed textbooks reflects Maria Wojtak’s concept of genre template, which includes structural, pragmatic, cognitive and stylistic aspect. The author uses genre-oriented content analysis. The results of the study show that textbook authors refer to all the four genre aspects although they do not do it in proportion. The knowledge of the genre template is crucial, but only the use of such template in an original text results in positive exam outcomes. Therefore it is advisable for language teachers to be aware of the complexity of a genre pattern, which consists of not only its composition but also communicative and cultural factors.
