Summary/Abstract: This article is concerned with rewritings of textual, linguistic and sociocultural norms in the first complete Romanian translation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, printed in the 19th century. The theoretical meaning(s) of norm, translation and rewriting are discussed. A taxonomy of norms is then put forward: (i) textual norms (e.g. the restructuring of dramatic acts, scenes, other graphical peculiarities); (ii) linguistic norms (e.g. calques, stylistic inadequacies); (iii) sociocultural norms (e.g. rewritings of gestures and meanings). These are analysed as rewritings of the source-text, the French translation by Le Tourneur, into the Romanian target-text.
