Summary/Abstract: The Christian poetry of the Late Roman Empire has a rather delayed start when compared to the bulk of the other patristic writings. However, these tarried beginnings are spectacularly recovered during the second half of the 4th century through the significant contributions of learned authors such as Ambrose of Mediolanum and Prudentius. Our present study dwells on a few poetic fragments of Prudentius’s works in which the Spaniard writer deals with the problem of writing itself. When read attentively, these fragments reveal that the writer is aware of the novelty of his Christian poetry within the context of a monumental pagan culture. An admirer of the achievements of the Roman-Greek world, Prudentius does not proceed to a complete rebuttal of the classical writers. Instead, he makes good use of the cultural thesaurus of the Antiquity to create a worthy and original corpus of poetic writings.
