Summary/Abstract: The subject of this work presents the analysis of the nature and function of prayer in the poetry of three Serbian poets – Ivan V. Lalić, Ljubomir Simović, and Matija Bećković. The paper seeks to show how poets of different sensibilities and poetics reach for one traditional medieval genre and how they include it in their poetry. Special emphasis is placed on poems that are written as prayers in front of the icon of Three-handed Theotokos (Bogorodica Trojeručica). This work also considers the issues of individual and historical identities in contemporary Serbian poetry, raises the topics of the poetic attitude towards tradition, cultural and historical past, and relativizes the established notions of traditional and modern.
