Summary/Abstract: This article wants to highlight why literary theory is good for our understanding of how the literature we give to children works. Children`s books are complex that’s why critics and writers need do establish concepts, ideas and methods. Even if there are literary critics from whose perspective children's literature is not worth studying, the article talks about the writers who share the conviction that children`s literature is worth reading, worth discussing and worth thinking about for adults, especially because these books have and have had a socially, culturally, and historically influence. The paper aims at artistic legitimation and defining the concept of children's literature, from several perspectives. Then a short history of the genre and of the critical reception is made, in order to reach the Romanian context and the brief analysis of the contemporary situation.
