Summary/Abstract: This review of research methodologies and methods in linguistic science has a dual focus. Firstly, the paper provides some essential historical background to the development of the scientific study of language in general and individual languages, including contemporary linguistic inquiry. Secondly, the review attempts to outline the division of labour between linguistic disciplines and models, their respective research methodologies and methods. By including both diachronic and synchronic aspects of linguistic inquiry, the review aims to provide an analyst with a few preliminaries that can be used to situate a linguistic issue in the complex landscape of linguistic theories and research methodologies.
