Summary/Abstract: The text introduces the image of the Bulgarian in the book by the Polish slavicist J. Golombek, The Soul of the Bulgarian People by inscribing it in the context of modern scientific ideas at the time (the interest in the theory of the “national soul“) and the politicohistorical context (the respect in Poland for the Bulgarian military victories during the Balkan wars). The image of the Bulgarian created by J. Golombek is also evaluated from the viewpoint of the interrelation between the external gaze of the foreigner and the internal, Bulgarian gaze (the familiar to the author self-portrait of the Bulgarian in the research by Bulgarian scholars).
