The Pilgrimage and the Orthodox Churches in Southwestern Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes preserved objects related to the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and to the Holy Mountain. It examines the stamped icons, the interpretations of the City of God and the Holy Mountain in separate scenes, replicas of miraculous icons, and ritual practices. The preserved artefacts in the temples of Southwestern Bulgaria lead to the conclusion of mostly direct contacts with the monasteries of Mount Athos. They are conditioned by the territorial proximity to and immediate interactions with representatives of the monasteries of Athos.
