Summary/Abstract: The present article aims at analysing the Spanish translations of some poems written by Wisława Szymborska, who is known for her frequent use of puns, relying especially on paronomasia, homonyms, and alliteration that aff ect the meaning as well as the form of a particular poem. Th is constitutes a challenge for translators, who use diff erent techniques to maintain most of the concepts that the wordplays bring to the original version. Th is rhetorical fi gure was not preserved in many of the Spanish translations analysed in this work; rather, the translators frequently replaced it by using another one. Th e way of translating puns signifi cantly infl uences the perception of Wisława Szymborska’s works, whose poems may therefore be interpreted diff erently in Spanish-speaking countries than in Poland.
