Summary/Abstract: The article discusses a portrait as a literary, funeral, and biographical genre. In this reading of Michał Głowiński’s Tęgie głowy [The Big Brains], the techniques which the author uses to present people in his portrait-essays in order to build up their depth are presented. Głowiński’s refer- ences to anecdotes, gossip, and his own memories make it possible for him to create portraits of several generations of Polish intelligentsia. The article demonstrates that Tęgie głowy is a col- lection of essays in which real events become to a degree fictional or fantastical since the reader either does not know the past or knows it based on incoherent accounts.
