Summary/Abstract: The paper argues that nuclear energy could play a significant role in decarbonizing the production of low carbon hydrogen from natural gas feedstock with associated carbon storage, as part of a wider shift towards ‘net-zero’ in Canada’s natural resources value chain. It examines regulatory readiness for small modular reactors in the oil, gas, and low-carbon energy sector of Canada’s energy jurisdiction, and calls for the speedy design and development of a single ‘go-to’ regulatory framework for nuclear energy in Alberta.
