Summary/Abstract: The paper first discusses the theoretical phenomenon of a spectacle in order to apply theoretical assumptions in the analysis of online media writing about the celebration of 1700 year anniversary of the Edict of Milan. We analyzed a total corpus of 30542 words from selected articles and comments collected between 2009 and 2013 from online media portals of daily newspapers, weekly magazines, tabloids, the public service, news agencies, media, religious media and exclusively web-based media. The results indicate that a state-centric celebration of 17 centuries since the Edict of Milan in Serbia include symbiosis of church and state, and has all characteristics of the spectacle medialized by the same model. The characteristics of the spectacle are overbudgeting, exaggeration, promoting political, economic and symbolic elites, not the event itself. In amateur media, the web portals followed the dynamics of the events and controversy, but not the essence of the reason for celebration. In comparison with editorial policies, media coverage formed the dominant discourse of reporting, often without critical reflection on the role of the state and the church in this event. Internet users were more critical towards the pseudo-event, and his mediatisation. At the same time, it cannot be conclu-ded that a virtual public opinion was formed. This time it turned out again that it was only a part of the public that was critical.
