Visual Forms and the Therapeutic Medium of Melancholy

Summary/Abstract: Considering artworks’ socio-political framework, we explore the therapeutic use of visualartworks to relieve a melancholic condition. The transformative effects of aesthetic arti-facts are evident in Durer’s work, intersecting physiological, religious, and political ele-ments in a program for self-knowledge and redemption. We will see that what is proposedis not a simple emulation of the means of curatio verbi but the sketching of a specific semio-sis, providing perception with an autonomous pathway for self-transformation.
