Prolegomena to a Historiography of the Sigillographic Research concerning Transylvania

Summary/Abstract: A topic like the historiography of the Transylvanian sigillographic research may be approached with reference to a time frame that stretches between the beginning of the 19th century and the contemporary period, which, in turn, can be divided into several phases due to both the natural evolution of historical knowledge, as well as the paradigm shifts that occurred when approaching such historical sources according to various trends or fashions. Aspects regarding the history of the sigillographic contributions concerning Transylvania were previously published in other contexts1 , but they limited themselves to a rather linear overview, without identifying or detaching the main reasons that determined such research perspectives within this discipline. On the other hand, the task of compiling a chronological, thematical and critical bibliography with reference to Transylvania would exceed the objectives of the present paper2 , which is why only the most important contributions that have established the main research directions will be mentioned and stressed upon.
