INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCATTERING OF CĂLUGĂRENI’S FRANCISCAN RELICS

Summary/Abstract: After the 1949 dissolution of the Franciscan monastery in Călugăreni, a mental asylum was established in its building. The believers’ pastoral care and religious service was tended by Franciscan monks and priests of the diocese. They tried to make the best possible decisions regarding the storage and conservation of the objects of art preserved from the church’s furniture and apparel. In several cases they tried to assure safer storage circumstances in other monasteries, but at the same time this led to the splitting up of an integral unit. The study follows up on the changing locations of some of the furniture and that of liturgical accessories (ceremonial objects, textiles, clothes) and presents the fate of those works of art that ended up in Târgu Mureș. By evoking the extraordinary wealth of the Franciscan past, the study aims at drawing attention to the importance of the settlement that is worthy of this legacy.
