Summary/Abstract: The Monastery of St Prochoros of Pčinja in the Republic of Serbia, located on the left bank of the Pčinja River in Southern Serbia, in the foothills of Mount Kozjak has undergone constant changes over the centuries. In the early twentieth century the catholicon was radically overhauled. A new church was built over the earlier one, which was an agglomeration of buildings. In the course of the construction works a number of chambers on the west side disappeared, and the extant ones were covered under the vaults of the new building. The extant murals of the earlier catholicon feature two layers. The upper one was painted in 1488–1489 on the funds donated by Marin, son of Father Radoia from Kratovo. The mural painting of the fifteenth century spreads over most of the church walls, while the earlier layer is witnessed in the parts, where the murals of the fifteenth century have been damaged. Beneath, there are mural paintings of the early fourteenth century. In 2005, restoration works on the murals of the fifteenth century were launched in the catholicon. A number of tests, checks and analyses were conducted in regard to the condition, techniques and technologies of the two layers of mural paintings. The reasons for the destructive processes that have had an impact on the paintings were also analysed. The results were taken into consideration in selecting the materials used over the following years. The restoration works were done in the period 2005–2007. Thanks to the joined efforts of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the Republic of Serbia and that of Niš, as well as with the support of the Serbian Orthodox Church, a fifteenth-century site of great cultural significance was preserved within Serbia’s territory.
