Summary/Abstract: The paper is devoted to a yet unstudied driving force behind the development of the verbal aspect in Old East Slavic. Itconsisted in crucial asymmetry between two classes of prefixal verbs: those with a lexical prefix (i.e. prefix considerablychanging the meaning of the stem) and those with a semantically bleached one. On the one hand, these kinds of verbswere all in all of the same formal complexity, and, by iconicity principle, could be expected to display similar functionalbehavior, but, on the other hand, the result implied by verbs with lexical prefix was less natural, and hence less integral,as it were more “fragile” was the relevant “scenario”. For this reason, Old East Slavic undertook various measures towardsmitigating the disparity, and one of them consisted in extensive formation of so-called secondary (proto)imperfectives.
