Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the importance of royal and national necropoles in the history of humanity. The so called ‘national pantheons’, the utmost form of honouring artists, writers or scholars, which began in the Renaissance period, were deemed particularly significant. Pantheons were to commemorate people who, thanks to their talents, contributed to the development of national literature and art. The author analyses the pantheon as a cultural phenomenon from the early modern period until the beginning of the 20th century. This diachronic study is complemented with a discussion of regional aspects of pantheon foundation, places of memory from Rome to Moscow and their local characteristics as well as historical and ideological determinants are in focus.
