Summary/Abstract: The outbreak of the First World War had a significant impact on the livesof the inhabitants of the town of Auras. In the first weeks of the war, more than80 men were enthusiastically mobilised for military service. At the same time, the rest of the town’s inhabitants tried to lead a relatively normal life. Numerouslocal associations and organisations were constantly active in Auras during thefirst months of the war, although almost every meeting centred around the situ-ation at the front. Local women were actively involved in helping the needy andthe soldiers, organising fund-raisers and work meetings. At the beginning ofNovember, the first signs of doubt about victory appeared in the town, expres-sed in conversations by residents. Although any defeatist talk was severely pu-nished by the local authorities, it increased over time.
