Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the Latin terminology on games and ways of spending free time from the 1 st century B.C. to the turn of the 6 th and 7 th century A.D. An analysis of terms and iconographic evidence serves as the basis for an attempt at the reconstruction of the rules of games such as duodecim scripta, ludus latrunculorum and alea.
