Summary/Abstract: In terms of personal and societal self-development, national identity, and interethnic communication, folklore is one of the most potent and active elements in reflecting the history of each nation. This article focuses on folklore and how it has shaped Kosovo‘s classical music canon. Folk music plays a significant role in the resiliency and identity of the Albanian people, and Kosovar artists frequently include it into their works, making it a significant component of the classical music repertory as well. However, I will first focus on what folk music actually means for Albanians in order to better appreciate the significance and link of folklore in classical compositions as well as how Kosovo classical music is in fact also folkloric. Then I‘ll talk about the impact folk music had on the earliest compositions by Kosovar classical composers, concentrating on the reasons behind the extensive usage of folklore and the composers who incorporated it into classical music. And in the final chapter, I‘ll assess the multiple perspectives of folklore and the various ways Kosovar composers integrated it into their classical repertoire. This report tries to throw some light on a topic that encompasses many facets of culture, music, and the Kosovar Albanian identity but has received little attention from musicologists and researchers in Kosovo and elsewhere. The paper is connected to my doctoral thesis titled „THE FLUTE PERFORMANCE IN KOSOVO AND ITS HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT IN EUROPE. A COMPARATIVE RESEARCH“.
