Summary/Abstract: The recent legislative proposals to restructure Slovakia’s public service broadcasters have sparked concerns about potential political interference and its impact on media freedom. These developments reflect broader European worries regarding media independence and the right of citizens to access unbiased information. Societal divisions, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have led to increased scrutiny of traditional media outlets. As a result, many citizens are increasingly turning to online platforms for information, challenging public media broadcasters to prove their impartiality and capacity to facilitate public debates. This article examines the key factors contributing to the rising attacks against Slovak journalists and traditional media. Our analysis underscores the importance of public service media in fostering genuine discussion within the country’s political landscape, despite the polarizing effects of social media and political attacks. We argue that public service media must strive to maintain its role as a platform for balanced discourse amidst these challenges.
