Summary/Abstract: It is a curious feature that for an organisation billed as the most powerful in the world there have actually not been that many books on it. Plenty on the Cold War, of course, but NATO has tended to have a walk-on role compared with the major powers. It may be the fact that NATO has succeeded—there has been no major war in Europe since 1945—has played its part. What did not happen-rather like the dog that didn’t bark in the night-is not obviously the stuff of drama.
