Summary/Abstract: On 26 July 1950, the German Bundestag finally decided in an animated session, to move the seat of the new Federal Court of Justice (the Court of Justice for Civil and Criminal Matters) to Karlsruhe. This decision by the legislature was the founding act for Karlsruhe, the former state capital of Baden, to become the seat of law. With the law of 4 May 1951, the Bundestag then also designated Karlsruhe as the (provisional) seat of the Federal Constitutional Court. The article sheds light on this process and then highlights key decisions and personalities to show the development of Karlsruhe as the seat of the Federal Constitutional Court, the Feder-al Court of Justice and the Federal Public Prosecutor‘s Office with a focus on the first three decades.
