Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the life and work of Ivan Turjanica (25 May 1901 – 27 March 1955), a famous Sub-Carpathian communist leader. Living a little more than half a century, Ivan Turjanica was one of the most influential figures in Carpathian Ukraine in the first years of sovietisation. He was born in Austria-Hungary. As a leftist politician, he made a career in democratic Czechoslovakia. Prior to the Hungarian occupation, he hid in the Soviet Union. After his return to Carpathian Ukraine as a member of the Czechoslovak delegation, he radically changed his beliefs, becoming the leader for the unification of Carpathian Ukraine and Soviet Ukraine. He chaired the People’s Council of Carpathian Ukraine and the Communist Party of Carpathian Ukraine. When the Zakarpattia Oblast was established as part of Soviet Ukraine (USSR), he continued to hold two functions until 1948 – the first secretary of the Zakarpattia Oblast Communist Party Committee and the chairman of the Zakarpattia Council of National Deputies. The author examines the development of Turjanica’s opinions, trying to discover ‘white spots’ in his biography that were painstakingly concealed by the Soviet political nomenclature and State Security bodies.
