Summary/Abstract: Placed at Georgia’s Northern border with Russia, South Ossetia is a mountainous region of approximately 3 900 square km and 70 000 inhabitants. Most part of the territory, including the capital, Tskhinvali, is led by the de facto government of the self-proclaimed Republic of South Ossetia, which declared its independence from Georgia twice, without any international acknowledgement. It was only after the recent conflict in the area, on August 26th, that Russia recognised its independence and it was the only state to do so. There are some parts of the South and East of the region that are led by Georgians, through a “Provisional Administrative Entity”. The majority of the population consists of Ossetians (80%), but there are also Russians, Georgians, Armenians, Greeks etc. in the region.
