Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the stages of economic de-velopment in Italy from the mid-19th century to the 1990s. The Italian economy is an interesting example among developed capitalist countries. In the post-war years, Italy, starting from a low level of economic development, quickly became one of the world’s industrial powers. The 1950s and 1960s were a period of dynamic industrialization of this country, which resulted in the emergence and dynamic development of a number of modern industries, especially chemical and engineering. Italy was even considered an example of an “eco-nomic miracle”. The main feature of this period was the rapid growth of gross national product (GNP) and net national product (NNP), which was accompanied by a high investment rate, dy-namic growth in exports, a significant reduction in unemployment and profound changes in the structure of employment. Since the mid-1990s, the Italian economy has been developing signifi-cantly slower than the EU average
