The Council fails but the Assembly goes strong: The activities of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly in the area of security in 2022

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of the works of the United Nations Security Council in 2022 and shows that the Council’s problems with achieving consensus have increased, not only due to new crises but also in regard to old regimes which have been on the SC’s agenda for years. As a consequence, new solutions are tested, e.g. calling emergency sessions of the UN General Assembly or instituting proceedings in the International Court of Justice. In addition, the article analyzes statistical data concerning UN peacekeeping operations.
