Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian textile handcrafts are among the few exceptions to the widespread deindustrialization of the “periphery”. The Bulgarian textile revolution from the National Revival was made possible by geography, remoteness from world trade flows and high domestic transport costs. As a result, the Bulgarian lands in the Ottoman Empire had relatively weaker connections with the world market, as a result of which our abajis and gaytanjis managed to literally conquer the Middle East and the Balkans with their aba, shayak and gaytan. Their economic prosperity created a basis for the cultural and political Revival of the Bulgarians.
