Summary/Abstract: From an intertextual perspective, this work aims to trace a continuity line between Don Quixote and the Spanish contemporary novel through the figure of the impostor, which holds significant aesthetic, sociological, and cultural importance in today’s world. To this end, we have chosen novels by Antonio Muñoz Molina, Luis Landero, Javier Cercas, and Enrique Vila-Matas. This study reveals one of the fundamental ways of updating Cervantes’ novel in contemporary fiction. It also showcases the wide variety of forms this motif assumes in the hands of current writers. Muñoz Molina treats it as a possibility for self-invention to avoid an unsatisfactory destiny imposed by society; Luis Landero views it as a “desire” for personal perfection and the embodiment of illusions fraught with challenges; Javier Cercas meticulously dissects the complex interplay between truth and falsehood; and Enrique Vila-Matas humorously provoke us with his identities that celebrate literature as a source of renewal and life. Th e examination of these examples reveals a growing interest in falsifications, the problem of truth and lies, and multiple identities.
