Summary/Abstract: Often referred to in German-speaking cultural circles as the "artist of exaggeration", Thomas Bernhard is undoubtedly a writer whose style of expression deliberately provoked and at the same time powerfully attracted his audience and critics. The sharper his sarcasm was, the greater was the literary success of his works. This article focuses on Thomas Bernhard's dramatic works, especially the plays that were performed both in the German-speaking world and in Romania. On the basis of literary criticism and theatre reviews, the reception of these dramatic works in both cultural areas is outlined. Special attention will be paid to the play Der Theatermacher, which has recently experienced a kind of revival in both cultural areas.
