Summary/Abstract: The article synthesises the position of drawing in the artistic culture of eighteenth-century Paris. It characterises the phenomenon of collecting works on paper, emphasising its embeddednessin practices characteristic of the previous century, the phenomenon’s scale, and its logisticalbackground. It also discusses how drawings were stored and presented in collectors’ cabinetsand flats. The second part of the article analyses the connection between the popularity ofdrawings and the amateur culture in Paris. It discusses the rise of publications adressedto amateurs, both tutorials and ‘albums’ of reproductions of highly acclaimed works onthe publishing market. The final part of the text is devoted to the artists’ activities and theirinvolvement in the production of drawings (sketches, dessins capitaux, and their variations).
