Summary/Abstract: Bernardo Bellotto’s paintings prove to be an extremely valuable source for research into thehistory of material culture, including eighteenth-century fashion. Foreshadowing a more comprehensiveproject, the present article develops the subject of the hussar costumes depictedby the artist. The author supports the hypothesis that Bellotto’s painting showing a hussar, keptin the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, presents Andrzej Poniatowski, the brother of KingStanisław August, together with his son, Prince Józef Poniatowski. The painting was paintedafter Andrzej’s death in 1773, and the king who commissioned it wanted to commemorate hismerits during the 1764 election. The model is depicted wearing a hussar uniform designed especially for hussars fighting on the side of the Czartoryski Party. An analysis conducted bythe author allowed for a new identification of the figures depicted by Bellotto.
