Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the discordant positions of Roberto Longhi and Denis Mahon on Guercino, starting from Longhi’s first essay published in 1926 to the 1968 Guercino exhibition curatedby Mahon and harshly reviewed by Longhi in Paragone Arte. There were many controversialpoints, from the dating of the paintings to the attributions. Still, the substantial point of discordbetween the two art historians was the alleged influence of Caravaggio on Guercino, firmlysupported by Longhi and denied by Mahon. Mahon’s study path is traced, his study tripsto Europe and Russia in search of works by Guercino are retraced, Mahon’s first essays onthe painter from Cento are analysed, and autograph replicas and workshop copies are alsodiscussed, a theme dear to both Longhi and Mahon.
