Summary/Abstract: The current paper sheds light on challenges and perspectives of communication between the members of the Police Force and the members of national minorities currently present in the territory of the Slovak Republic. By presenting the relevant egal frameworks at the national, European and international levels, the author provides a closer look at the legislative and institutional definition of the use of the minority languages in the official and also day-to-day communication between the respective groups — members of the Police Force and members of the national minorities — while pointing out the needs of the organisational units of the Police Force in relation to language competence of the employees of District Directorates and Local Police Departments across Slovakia. Based on data obtained from a questionnaire survey conducted by the Office of the Plenipotentiary of the Government of the Slovak Republic for National Minorities, the author analyses the current situation and problematic areas of communication with members of national minorities living in Slovakia from the perspective of members of the Police Force.
