Summary/Abstract: Using examples of the literary motif of cricket, the essay points to the growth of semantic associations linked with this ‘thing’ (wu 物) in Chinese poetry. In this connection, it is discussed how the treatment of a literary motif is related both to the observation of reality and to the study of earlier – mainly canonical – texts. The author also briefly touches on the relation of literary tradition to the customs of breeding crickets for entertainment.
