SOURCE, MYTH, THEME, MOTIVES IN THE GENERAL OF THE DEAD ARMY

Summary/Abstract: A drawing of Jacques Tardi illustrates Louis Ferdinand Céline’s novel Journey to the End of the Night where a general leads an army of dead. This steers our view to Odysseus’ journey to hell; the atrocious visions of him in Odyssey and in the lost work Ghost Raisers. Beyond the grave, together with the horrors, the reader witnesses the cyclical dire straits, the bad weather, the rugged terrain, starting in the Herakles’ Labor, continuing in The Frogs. Lasty, we view the Bone Gatherers. One has the impression to behold a chest with many drawers, that is, the myth. The drawers are the theme, the motives, the source. Let’s open them and uncover their secrets.
