Summary/Abstract: The novel "Dervish and Death," which is set against the historical background of 18th century Bosnia, is remarkable for its rich historical narrative. Within this nuanced depiction, the skillful connection established between the historical situation of Bosnia and Dubrovnik serves as a coherent example of effectively portraying the past within a novel. The work, which places Dubrovnik's expertise in trade at the forefront, also acknowledges their fame in espionage. The significance of Dubrovnik's Adriatic-connected maritime trade, the importance of the city's economy for the Balkans, and Austria's ambitions over Bosnia and Dubrovnik, are all vividly articulated within the simple sentences scattered throughout the work. The primary aim of the diplomatic city-state is neither to appease the Catholic West nor to assist the Muslim lords in the East. For this city-state, where every step taken for economic dynamics is considered permissible, the main goal is the sustainability of foreign trade. This study aims to relate the portrayal of Dubrovnik in the novel to historical reality. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight the importance of the role played by this city-state in Balkan history during the Early Modern Age.
